Google titles and descriptions are measured in pixels
Google does not count characters. It shows as much of a title link or snippet as fits the screen and cuts the rest. A title of wide capital letters gets cut sooner than one of narrow lower-case letters with the same number of characters. The Google rows measure your text in Arial at the sizes Google uses on desktop results, 20 pixels for titles and 14 for descriptions, and compare it with widths of about 600 and 920 pixels. Treat them as a guide, not a rule.
Questions
How long can an Etsy title be?
Etsy allows up to 140 characters in a listing title. Etsy suggests putting the words a shopper would search for first, because search results show only the start of the title.
How many tags can I add on Etsy?
Up to 13 tags per listing, each up to 20 characters. Type your tags separated by commas and choose Etsy tags in the list to see which ones are too long or over the limit of 13.
How long can an Amazon product title be?
From 27 July 2026, Amazon.com product titles in every category except media must be 75 characters or fewer, including spaces. Amazon says details that do not fit can go in the item highlights, which allow another 125 characters. Some categories set a lower limit.
How long should a Google title or meta description be?
Google sets no character limit. It cuts title links and snippets to fit the width of the screen, so the real limit is in pixels. The Google rows measure your text in the font Google uses on desktop and compare it with about 600 pixels for a title and 920 pixels for a description. Those widths are estimates, not Google rules.
Why does X count my post differently?
X counts most characters as 1 but counts emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters as 2, and every link as 23 however long it is. The X row uses the same rules, so a 140-character Japanese post shows as 280.
What counts as a character here?
The big number counts what you see on screen, so an emoji with a skin tone counts as one character. Bytes are the size of the text in UTF-8, which matters for some feeds and databases. Each platform row counts the way that platform says it does.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing you type leaves your device.
