Questions

What is an HS code?

The Harmonized System (HS) code is the 6-digit product code that customs offices in more than 200 countries use to classify goods. The first 6 digits are the same everywhere. Each country adds its own digits after that, for example the 10-digit HTS code in the United States.

How is an HS code different from an HTS code?

The HS code has 6 digits and is international. The US Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) adds 4 more digits, and those decide the US duty rate. This tool always gives the 6-digit code, and adds the likely US line with its general duty rate when your description is clear enough to pick one.

How accurate is it?

It reads your description, checks the official tariff schedule and compares rulings US Customs has issued on similar goods. It is a fast first answer, not a binding decision. The more you say about material, use and how the item is made, the better the result. For shipments that matter, confirm the code with a licensed customs broker.

What does the general duty rate mean?

It is the standard US rate for goods from countries with normal trade relations. Extra duties based on the country of origin, and lower rates under trade agreements, are not included.

Is it free?

Yes. Each visitor gets 10 new lookups a day, and answers to questions someone already asked come back instantly. If you sell on Shopify and need codes for a whole catalog, the Nookbyte HS Code & Duties app does it in bulk.
