UTM link builder
Add Google Analytics campaign tags to a link, or to a whole list of links. Names are cleaned up as you type, the rest of your link stays exactly as it was, and nothing leaves your browser.
How to build a UTM link
- Paste the page you want people to land on.
- Pick a preset, or type the source, medium and campaign. Names are lowercased and spaces become dashes unless you change that.
- Copy the tagged link, open it to test it, or make a QR code from it for print.
- For a list of links, choose Many links, paste them one per line, and download the CSV.
The parameters Google Analytics 4 reads
From Google's guide, URL builders: Collect campaign data with custom URLs. Google recommends always using source, medium and campaign.
| Parameter | What it is for | Google's examples |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where the visitor comes from: a site, platform or publication | google, newsletter4, billboard |
| utm_medium | The marketing medium | cpc, banner, email |
| utm_campaign | Product, slogan or promo code | spring_sale |
| utm_id | Campaign ID for a specific campaign or promotion. Use the same IDs as your campaign data uploads | spring_2026_us |
| utm_term | Paid keyword | running_shoes |
| utm_content | Tells apart creatives or links that go to the same page, such as two buttons in one email | header_button |
| utm_source_platform | The platform that sends the traffic | Search Ads 360 |
| utm_creative_format | Type of creative. Google says it is not reported in Analytics yet | display, native, video |
| utm_marketing_tactic | Targeting criteria. Google says it is not reported in Analytics yet | remarketing, prospecting |
Naming tips
- Pick one source name per platform and keep it: facebook, not Facebook in one link and fb in another.
- Pick one medium per channel, such as email, cpc or paid_social.
- Use the exact campaign name everywhere, so one campaign stays one row in your reports.
- Use utm_content to tell apart links that go to the same page, such as a header button and a footer link.
Questions
Does it change the rest of my link?
No. Other parameters in your link stay exactly as you wrote them, in the same order. UTM tags already in the link are replaced, so an old campaign never mixes with the new one. The tags go before any # part of the link, because a web address keeps its query parameters before the #.
Which parameters do I need?
Google's guide says to always use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. The others are optional. Google also recommends utm_id when you import campaign data, because missing values show as "(not set)" in reports.
Why lowercase everything?
UTM values are case sensitive. Google Analytics counts utm_source=Facebook and utm_source=facebook as two different sources, which splits your reports. Lowercase with dashes or underscores keeps every link consistent.
What is utm_id?
The campaign ID. Use it to identify a specific campaign or promotion, with the same IDs you use when you upload campaign data to Google Analytics.
Can I tag many links at once?
Yes. Choose Many links and paste one link per line. Every link gets the tags from the form, and you can give a line its own values after the link, separated by commas or tabs. Download the result as a CSV file for a spreadsheet.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. The links are built in your browser and are not sent to Nookbyte or anyone else.
