Shopify product CSV checker

Find what will stop a Shopify product import before you upload it. Each problem shows the row, the column and how to fix it, and you can download a cleaned-up copy. The file never leaves your device.

You can also paste one with Ctrl+V. Shopify product CSV, up to 15 MB.

How to check a Shopify product CSV

  1. Export your products from Shopify, or fill in Shopify's product CSV template.
  2. Drop the CSV on this page. It is checked on your device in a few seconds, even at 15 MB.
  3. Fix the errors first: Shopify rejects those rows or the whole file. Then look at the warnings.
  4. Download the fixed copy for the safe clean-ups, such as trimmed spaces and true or false values, and import that file in Shopify under Products, Import.

Columns and the values Shopify accepts

Shopify renamed many columns in its current template. Both names work, as long as a file uses only one of them for each column.

How variants are laid out

A product with variants takes one row per variant. The first row holds the title, description, vendor and tags, the option names, and the first variant. Each row after it repeats the URL handle, leaves the title blank and gives the next variant's option values, SKU and price. Extra images go on rows of their own with the handle and the image link. Keep all of a product's rows together.

Questions

Is my CSV uploaded?

No. The file is read and checked inside your browser, and the fixed copy is made there too. Nothing is sent to Nookbyte or anyone else, which matters for files with costs and stock levels.

What does the checker look at?

The encoding and size of the file, the column names, URL handles, how variant rows are grouped under their product, option names and values, prices and other numbers, the values Shopify allows in columns such as Status and Continue selling when out of stock, image links, duplicate SKUs, and empty rows. Each problem shows the row and column it is in.

What does the fixed CSV change?

Only changes that cannot alter what you meant: trimming spaces around values and column names, writing true and false, active and deny in the lowercase form Shopify lists, turning yes and no into true and false, cleaning up URL handles, standard unit spellings, and removing empty rows. The page lists every change before you download. Anything that needs a decision, such as a price written as $19,99, is left for you.

Will cleaning a URL handle create a new product?

It can. If a product with the old handle is already in your store and you import with Overwrite products with matching handles, a changed handle no longer matches it, so Shopify adds a new product. If you are updating existing products, use the handles your store already has.

My file uses Handle and Variant Price. Is that wrong?

No. Those are the older column names, and Shopify still accepts them. Its current template calls them URL handle and Price. Use one name for each column, not both.

How big can a Shopify product CSV be?

Shopify says a product CSV can't exceed 15 MB. If yours is bigger, split it into several files and keep all the rows of each product in the same file.

Does it check product categories and metafields?

Not yet. Product category must exactly match Shopify's product taxonomy, and metafield values depend on their definitions in your store. The checker recognises those columns but does not check their values.
